The young Gilbert Stuart was working in London when he painted this lively full-length portrait of William Grant gliding across the ice in a dark coat and hat. According to tradition, Grant arrived to sit on a cold day and suggested they go skating instead. Shown at the Royal Academy in 1782, the painting made Stuart's reputation years before he painted George Washington. Andrew W. Mellon Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
