Rembrandt painted this meditation on fame and wisdom in 1653 for the Sicilian collector Don Antonio Ruffo. The philosopher Aristotle rests his hand on a bust of the poet Homer while wearing a gold chain with a medallion of Alexander the Great, his famous pupil. Glowing sleeves and a shadowed face invite us to wonder what he is thinking. When the Met acquired it in 1961, the price set a world record for a painting at auction. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
