Long before his famous ballet dancers, Edgar Degas painted this early self-portrait while in his early twenties. He presents himself soberly, in a dark coat and crisp white collar, with a reserved, watchful expression. The careful drawing reflects his admiration for Ingres and the old masters he was studying at the time. It offers a rare look at the young artist before he helped launch Impressionism. Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
