Claude Monet painted his wife Camille and their young son Jean on a breezy hillside near Argenteuil in the summer of 1875. Seen from below against a bright, cloud-streaked sky, Camille seems caught in a passing moment, her veil and skirt lifted by the wind. Monet painted it outdoors with quick, loose strokes, and it has become one of the defining images of Impressionism. Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
