Raphael portrayed the wealthy Florentine banker Bindo Altoviti, a patron of the arts in Rome, when the sitter was in his early twenties. He turns over his shoulder with golden hair and an intense blue-green gaze, set against a deep green background. For centuries the painting was believed to be a self-portrait of Raphael himself, a sign of how personal it feels. Samuel H. Kress Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
