Francisco Goya painted this unusual self-portrait as a thank-you to his physician. Gravely ill in 1819, the aging artist slumps against Dr. Eugenio García Arrieta, who holds a glass of medicine to his lips. Shadowy figures crowd the background. An inscription along the bottom records Goya's gratitude for the care that saved his life. It is one of the most personal paintings of his career. The Ethel Morrison Van Derlip Fund, Minneapolis Institute of Art.
