Pietro Bembo was a celebrated Venetian scholar and poet whose writings helped establish the modern Italian literary language. Titian, his friend, painted him around the time Pope Paul III made him a cardinal in 1539. Dressed in rich red, Bembo turns with a commanding gesture, as though about to speak. The portrait is a vivid record of Renaissance learning. Samuel H. Kress Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
