Elizabeth Linley was one of the most admired singers in eighteenth-century England. She eloped with the young playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan, who fought two duels over her. Thomas Gainsborough, a friend of the Linley family, painted her seated outdoors, her hair and dress melting into the feathery landscape. The portrait is a high point of Gainsborough's late style. Andrew W. Mellon Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
