Vincent van Gogh painted this self-portrait in 1889 at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, the year before his death. He shows himself holding a palette and brushes, a quiet declaration that he was still a working painter after a period of severe illness. The restless, rhythmic brushwork of the background answers the intensity of his gaze. It is one of the last self-portraits he made. Collection of Mr. and Mrs. John Hay Whitney, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
