Painted in Paris in 1887, this small self-portrait shows Van Gogh absorbing the latest ideas of the city's avant-garde. Inspired by Georges Seurat's dotted technique, he built his face and background from short dabs of complementary color, orange against blue and red against green. The rapid, vibrating strokes give the image a nervous energy that points toward his later style. Joseph Winterbotham Collection, Art Institute of Chicago.
