In 1661 Rembrandt cast himself as Saint Paul. He holds a sheaf of pages, a reference to the apostle's letters, and the hilt of a sword, Paul's traditional attribute, pokes out from his cloak. His raised brows and wry expression make the role-play feel personal and slightly self-mocking. It is the only known self-portrait in which Rembrandt depicts himself as a biblical figure. De Bruijn-van der Leeuw Bequest, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
