Madame du Barry, the last mistress of King Louis XV, was painted several times by Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, the most fashionable portraitist in prerevolutionary France. In this 1782 portrait she wears a straw hat and a simple white dress, reflecting the new taste for natural elegance. A decade later, during the Revolution, du Barry was guillotined. Corcoran Collection (William A. Clark Collection), National Gallery of Art, Washington.
