Thomas Sully painted fifteen-year-old Eliza Ridgely of Baltimore standing beside a tall gilded harp, plucking a string while she gazes out of the frame. Her flowing white gown and the soft, romantic light make it one of the most elegant American portraits of its time. Eliza later became mistress of Hampton, her husband's family estate in Maryland. Gift of Maude Monell Vetlesen, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
