Lucas Cranach the Elder was a friend and neighbor of Martin Luther in Wittenberg, and his workshop created the images through which Europe came to know the reformer's face. This 1526 portrait shows Luther in his dark scholar's gown, a year after his marriage to Katharina von Bora. Cranach's portraits of Luther circulated widely and helped make him one of the most recognizable people of his age. Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.
