Johannes Vermeer, Study of a Young Woman (c. 1665–1667) Fine Art Print

This luminous head by Johannes Vermeer is a tronie, a character study rather than a portrait of a named sitter. Her wide-set eyes, soft smile and silky wrap glow against a dark background, much like Vermeer's famous Girl with a Pearl Earring, painted around the same time. With only about three dozen paintings by Vermeer known today, each one is a rarity. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wrightsman, in memory of Theodore Rousseau Jr., The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
