Painted in Arles in 1888, La Mousmé shows a young girl seated in a bentwood chair, holding a sprig of oleander. Van Gogh took the title from Pierre Loti's novel Madame Chrysanthème, in which "mousmé" describes a young Japanese girl, reflecting his fascination with Japanese prints. He wrote that it took all his mental energy to paint her well. Her striped jacket and polka-dot skirt glow against a pale green wall. Chester Dale Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
