Giuliano de' Medici, the younger brother of Lorenzo the Magnificent, was murdered in Florence Cathedral in 1478 during the Pazzi conspiracy. Sandro Botticelli's portrait, likely painted soon after, shows him with lowered eyelids, and a turtledove perched on a dead branch may allude to mourning. The image is both a likeness and a memorial for the beloved young prince of Florence. Samuel H. Kress Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
