Jacques-Louis David portrayed the founder of modern chemistry, Antoine Lavoisier, with his wife Marie Anne, his close scientific collaborator, who had studied drawing with David. Laboratory glassware sits on the table, and a drawing portfolio rests behind her. The painting was withdrawn from the Paris Salon of 1789 amid the political tension of the Revolution, and Lavoisier was guillotined in 1794. Purchase, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wrightsman Gift, 1977, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
