Rembrandt's most famous painting is really a daytime group portrait of an Amsterdam civic militia company led by Captain Frans Banninck Cocq and his lieutenant, Willem van Ruytenburch. The nickname "Night Watch" arose much later, when darkened varnish made the scene look nocturnal. Instead of lining the guardsmen up, Rembrandt set them in motion, full of light, gesture and noise. In 1715 the canvas was trimmed on all sides to fit a wall in Amsterdam's town hall. On loan from the City of Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
