The sculptor Jacques Lipchitz commissioned this double portrait of himself and his new wife Berthe, partly to help his struggling friend Amedeo Modigliani. Modigliani made many drawings before painting the canvas, giving the couple his signature elongated faces and almond eyes. The work captures the artistic community of Montparnasse in Paris during World War I. Helen Birch Bartlett Memorial Collection, Art Institute of Chicago.
