Diego Velázquez painted Juan de Pareja, his enslaved assistant and fellow painter, in Rome in 1650. Shown at the Pantheon, it reportedly astonished viewers with its lifelike presence. That same year Velázquez signed a document granting Pareja his freedom, and Pareja went on to an independent career as an artist. His direct, dignified gaze makes this one of the great portraits of the seventeenth century. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
