James McNeill Whistler's life-size study in white shows his companion and muse Joanna Hiffernan standing on a wolfskin rug, holding a lily. Rejected by both the Royal Academy in London and the official Paris Salon, it caused a sensation at the 1863 Salon des Refusés, where critics struggled to make sense of a painting with no story. Whistler later added the musical title to stress color and harmony over narrative. Harris Whittemore Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
