This quiet masterpiece by the Flemish painter Rogier van der Weyden shows an unknown young woman with lowered eyes, her hands folded and her face framed by a sheer, starched veil. Rogier reduced the image to a few elegant shapes and refined lines, giving it a stillness that feels almost modern. The sitter's identity has never been established, which only adds to its mystery. Andrew W. Mellon Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
