Judith Leyster turns from her easel with an easy smile, brush in hand, while the canvas behind her shows a merry fiddler. In 1633 she became one of the first women admitted to the painters' Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem. For centuries, many of her works were credited to Frans Hals, and her reputation was revived only in the late 1800s. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Woods Bliss, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
