This is the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas. The young Florentine Ginevra de' Benci sits before a spiky juniper bush, a pun on her name, since "ginepro" is Italian for juniper. Leonardo was in his early twenties, and he softened the modeling with his fingertips, which left prints in the paint. The reverse carries a wreath and the Latin motto "Beauty adorns virtue."
