Johannes Vermeer painted fewer than forty pictures, and this is one of the smallest and most striking. A young woman turns toward us beneath a flamboyant red hat, her lips parted and her eyes catching the light. Unusually for Vermeer, it is painted on a wooden panel, and technical study revealed another portrait beneath the surface. Like Girl with a Pearl Earring, it is a tronie, a study of a face and costume rather than a commissioned likeness. Andrew W. Mellon Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
