Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted a little girl in a blue velvet dress and lace collar, holding a watering can on a flower-lined garden path. The soft, feathery brushwork makes the flowers shimmer around her. The identity of the girl has never been confirmed. Painted the same year as Renoir's Dance at the Moulin de la Galette, it is one of his most beloved images of childhood. Chester Dale Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
