During his two years in Paris, Van Gogh could rarely afford models, so he painted himself more than twenty times. In this 1887 self-portrait he wears a grey felt hat and a dark suit, and the whole image is built from short, directional strokes of contrasting color that seem to radiate around his head. It shows how quickly he turned the lessons of Impressionism and Pointillism into something unmistakably his own. Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (Vincent van Gogh Foundation).
