Hans Holbein the Younger painted the infant Prince Edward, the long-awaited son of Henry VIII, and the portrait was presented to the king as a New Year's gift on January 1, 1539. The toddler holds a gold rattle like a scepter, and a Latin verse below urges him to equal or surpass his father. Edward became king at nine and died at fifteen. Andrew W. Mellon Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
